Event overview

November 26, 2024

10:00 am to 11:00 am

Join us for a special performance led by Saba Jamali featuring Persian traditional music, also known as Iranian classical music or Radif music. It is the classical music of Iran with roots that stretch back over thousands of years. It encompasses the musical traditions and cultural heritage of ancient Persia, blending various regional influences from across Iran and beyond.

Key elements of Persian traditional music:

Radif: The foundation of Persian classical music is Radif, a collection of melodies passed down through generations. These melodies are organized into different Dastgahs (modes or systems), each with its own unique mood, emotion, and intervals. The Radif serves as a framework for musicians to improvise and compose.

Dastaghs: Persian music is structured around 12 Dastgahs, which are akin to musical scales or modes. Each Dastgah has a particular emotional quality and set of melodies called Gushehs. These Dastaghs includes Shur, Mahur, Segah, Chahargah, Nava, Homayoun, and Rast Panjgah.

Improvisation : Plays a central role in Persian music, allowing musicians to express their individuality while remaining within the structure of the Dastgah.

This series is brought to you by the Iranian Music Society.
