Borrow & renew

NVCL does not charge fines on overdue materials. However, please note that we charge the replacement cost for lost items and long-overdue (6 weeks) items assumed to be lost.

All library materials may be borrowed with a library card, except reference materials and home services audiobooks. Registration for a library card is free. If you give us your email address you will receive renewal and overdue reminders.

When you wish to return library materials, you may do so through the automated exterior book drop, which is open 24/7 on the east side of the library.

Changes to borrowing

Loan periods have been simplified to 4 weeks (previously 3 weeks) for most regular materials, and 2 weeks (previously 1 week) for high-demand items such as DVDs and video games.

Changes to placing holds

There is no fee to place holds on titles in our catalogue. There is a $1 fee for holds that are not picked up and checked out.

During the pandemic, holds are now organized by the customer’s last name in the library lobby, just to the right of the entrance. Arrows on the floor indicate foot traffic direction and self-checkout machines are available in the same area. It is quick and easy to pick up holds without coming into contact with staff or other library users. When you get a notice that your hold is available, you have two weeks to pick up the item, which must be done during our open hours.

Renewal via our online catalogue

Go to our catalogue, and log in using your library barcode and PIN (last 4 digits of your phone number), then select the "My Account" menu link.
