City Library fills missing piece of collection with board games & puzzles for all ages, skills

Santa stopped by City Library early this year to drop off nearly 200 brand new board games and jigsaw puzzles for the library’s collection in hopes the haul will help the community to enjoy meaningful, screen-free time together this season.

“We know the pandemic has really upended a lot of holiday plans, and people are feeling tired of screens. We hope this new collection inspires people to spend quality time with their household or social bubble in a safe, fun way,” Chief Librarian Deb Hutchison Koep said.

The collection includes classics such as Scrabble and Operation and popular contemporaries like Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan. Jigsaw puzzles range from 300 to 2,000 pieces.

“A lot of modern board games can also be cost prohibitive for families, so this is a great way to try something new and have a little friendly competition during  financially strained times,” said Walter Zicha, Head of Acquisitions and Collection Management.

Customers must have a library card to borrow an item from the new collection — registering for a new library card is free. Customers may check out a maximum of two puzzles or two games (or one puzzle and one game) per library card. Games and puzzles can be checked out for 28 days and must be returned in person at the Welcome Desk.
