Teen zine


We are now accepting submissions for the Summer 2021 issue of the teen zine! This issue's theme is superheroes.

What makes a superhero? A cape and superpowers? Acts of bravery or kindness? An underdog who defies the odds, or a community helper who flies under the radar? We want to see your interpretation of who, or what, a superhero is.

Submission deadline: Aug. 8

We're looking for the following kinds of content:

  • Photography
  • Illustrations
  • Comic strips
  • Poetry (1 page max.)
  • Creative writing (750 word max.)
  • Non-fiction articles about (or interviews with) local superheroes (750 word max.)
  • Non-fiction articles about your personal superhero (750 word max.)
  • Book reviews (150 word max.)
  • Movie reviews (150 word max.)

Need some ideas? Here's some examples to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Comic strip of a person obtaining superpowers
  • Interview with a local firefighter
  • Article about entertainer and French Resistance spy Josephine Baker
  • Poem about never giving up
  • A short story about an inter-galactic soldier protecting their home planet
  • A book review of Black Snake by Kathryn Todrys, about Indigenous activists who fought the Dakota Access pipeline

How to submit:

  • Submission deadline: August 1
  • Open to youth in grades 7-12 (as of Sept. 2021) and 2021 grads living in the Lower Mainland
  • Email your submission as an attachment to nvclteenzine@gmail.com
  • Accepted file types are .doc, .docx, .pdf, .jpg, .png
  • Include your first and last name, grade, and school in your email

This issue will be released in late August on our website and on our Instagram channel @northvancitylibrary as a featured story.

Please note, due to limited space your submission may not be included in this issue. However, it may be included in a future issue.
