The Hidden Enemy

Our third annual teen writing contest, organized by our Teen Advisory Council, is open for submissions that explore the theme The Hidden Enemy. All entries are due Sunday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m.



  • Open to all North Shore teens in grades 7 – 12
  • Entries must be 1,000 words or less
  • Work should explore this year’s theme, The Hidden Enemy



  • Entries must be received by Sunday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. PDT
  • Email all entries as an attachment to 
  • Include your full name, school and grade level in the body of the email


Shortlisted and winning writers will be celebrated at a virtual awards gala hosted by City Library on Saturday, Nov. 21. Stay tuned for more details on the gala. All shortlisted and winning writers will have their work compiled into an ebook available via our website.



  • Honourable Mention, grades 7 – 9: $25 gift card to Booklovers
  • Honourable Mention, grades 10 –12: $25 gift card to Booklovers
  • First Place, grades 7 – 9: $50 gift card to Booklovers First Place, grades 10 – 12, $50 gift card to Booklovers
  • Overall winner: $50 gift card to Booklovers and a one-to-one virtual meeting to workshop your writing with author Tanya Boteju*

*Tanya Boteju is an English teacher and writer living on unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations (Vancouver, Canada). Her debut novel, Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens, was named a Top Ten Indie Next Pick by the American Booksellers Association, as well as selected for the American Librarian Association 2020 Rainbow List. Her work appeared in the short story anthology Out Now (Inkyard Press) and Boteju’s next YA novel, Bruised, is due out with Simon & Schuster in 2021. Tanya is continually inspired by the brilliant young people she teaches and hopes to continue contributing to the ever-growing, positive representation of diverse lives in literature.
