Play and Learn

We have an exciting array of interactive activities in the children’s department. Called 'Play and Learn', the goal is to support parents and caregivers as their child’s best first teacher (for at-home activities, check out our Play and Learn at Home page).

When families arrive at the library, they’ll find many new opportunities to play together and learn. As they play – and talk, sing, read, and write – they’ll develop the early literacy skills that children need before learning to read themselves. Examples include an 'Eye Spy' table, finding games, guessing games, and measuring columns to track and follow changes in height and growth.

Research shows that play improves children’s success at school, teaches problem-solving skills, and reduces stress and anxiety. Building on the success of our very popular PREPARE program for children and caregivers, Play and Learn provides easily accessible opportunities for families to discover their world together – any time the library is open. With this initiative, we are very pleased to continue to support improving literacy readiness for kindergarten in the City of North Vancouver.

Many thanks to the following sponsors for their support of our 'Play and Learn' installation:
